Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

THANK YOU PETER !!!!!!!!

A little FYI for you - Saoirse Ronan was initially cast in this role but she backed out for some unknown reason. Her character was called Itaril though. Also before Ronan backed out she did say that she would be working on the movie in New Zealand for about a year, so I assume Evi will be moving to NZ for that amount of time too?.

Came in to say this. It's not like I'm not already pumped about this project, but now! Holy cow! I don't know if I'll make it to the theatre alive!

Is Norman going to move to NZ with Evi and the baby..what about his job at H50? and I assume that Evi is going to be working some very long hours while filming so I wonder who is going to look after the baby?

Is her role really big enough that she will have to move to New Zealand for a whole year?

I dunno, im just guessing at the moment because that's what Saoirse Ronan said about her role. Evi's role may be smaller or it maybe bigger but she will have to move to New Zealand to film even if its just for a few months

I agree that she will at least have to live there for a few months. But I really don't think it is the same role as the one Saorise was going to have because the character had a different name.

According to some LoTR forums Saoirse was supposed to play a woodland Elf too and if you rearrange the letters of her characters name Itaril and add a "u" and a "e" you get Tauriel so it could be the same character but will a slightly different name.

her character isn't in the book. but she plays a sylvan elf which Tolkien describe them as the "savages" elf, because they live deep in the forest of Mirkwood so they aren't in touch with the human race as much other elf kind
