'Date Night' director Shawn Levy gets serious with next project 'Real Steel'
TORONTO - Montreal-born director Shawn Levy is touting 10-year-old Toronto actor Dakota Goyo as the next big export to take over movie screens.
The prolific filmmaker, known for helming action comedies including "Date Night" and the "Night at the Museum" series, is switching to more dramatic fare with the futuristic sci-fi film, "Real Steel," starring Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly.
He says from the film's Detroit set that Goyo appears in nearly every frame alongside Jackman, who plays a washed-up fighter who promotes robot boxing while trying to reconnect with his estranged son.
Levy describes the father-son tale as more "Paper Moon" than "Transformers."
"We saw hundreds of boys, literally all over the world," Levy says of the casting search for the role of young Max.
"I first saw Dakota on tape, then I saw him in person, then I saw him in person again with Hugh Jackman and he's not only a great 10-year-old actor but he's got something kind of magical about him. In a movie like this, which has a certain kind of magical, lyrical quality, Dakota was perfect."
Until this role, Goyo's acting resume largely consisted of bit parts on TV shows including "Happy Town," "Murdoch Mysteries" and "The Listener."
Levy says "Real Steel," which also features Hope Davis ("In Treatment") and Canadian actor Kevin Durand ("Lost"), has the potential to launch Goyo into the big leagues.
"This movie and this role is on a scale completely separate from anything that he's dealt with before," Levy says of the film, set for release in November 2011.
"Though he's experienced enough to know how to hit a mark and what a camera is, etc., etc., he's very, very natural. He's very kind of moment-to-moment and above all, his connection with Evangeline and Hugh is so sincere on screen that it just gives the movie a really warm quality." "It's a big opportunity for Dakota and he's definitely seizing it."
The heavy family drama is a switch from the more silly material Levy has become known for.

From the way Evi is talked about in the article, it sounds like she has a lead role

Yeah i think she will be the lead actress in the movie but whether she will have a decent amount of screen time is another story. After all the movie basically revolves around Hugh Jackman's character and his son so they will have the most screen time.
But its nice to know that Evi will share the screen with someone other than Hugh
