Evangeline Lilly of ‘Lost’ isn’t about to lose it

Postby tatibsblp » Sun Aug 01, 2010 11:35 pm

This interview with Evi has only just been published, though it was done a while ago.

A week before the show’s final episode aired simultaneously all over the world, Super sat down with lead star Evangeline Lilly to talk about memories, character evolution and future prospects.

Six seasons, six years. In a few days, it all ends. Have you said goodbye to Kate?

I really am ready to say goodbye. I’ve been preparing to say goodbye. I spent the first five months of this last season just savoring the experience. Savoring it with the people I work with, the environment we’re shooting in, the beautiful wilds of Hawaii. I have to admit I’ve passed the grief and mourning stages. I’ve really gone through the motions, making sure I have paid my respects to the show before it all ends.

The Kate in this final run is not the same Kate we met in the pilot episode. Talk to us about your character’s development.

Kate has had a very strong revolutionary arc, which I’m very happy about. You know, I think a character that stays the same for six years is boring. Kate started out as a guarded, angry fugitive. She’s eventually made it her way to be a relatively softhearted mother. She’s become a more open woman, more open to love and connections. I like that.

Looking back, what do you like most about Kate being a key figure on the island?

That Kate is a noble woman. She’s not two-faced. She’ll tell you where you stand. I think that’s a great characteristic for a human being.

Which of Kate’s attributes do you like the least?

She’s not so cooperative. She likes doing spontaneous things that deviate from what is happening.

What particular aspects of “Lost” do you think made it attractive to millions of devoted followers?

“Lost” appeals to the sensibilities of so many demographics. It represents so many viewpoints—racially, socially, economically. It deals with universal themes. I don’t think the show is only for a few people, but for everyone who’s experienced what real life and real relationships have to offer.

What was your favorite moment while working on the show?

My favorite moment surprisingly didn’t take place while filming the show. It was our big farewell party here in Hawaii. Everyone went up the stage, grabbed the microphone, and talked about what “Lost” meant to each of them.

For six years, you’ve worked and lived on the beaches of Hawaii—completely different from the environment you’re used to.

Aside from the community we’ve built here, painting is a real release for me. I paint to allow myself to let go. Painting has helped me go through the little struggles of day-to-day living here.

What’s something not a lot of people know about you?

People probably don’t know that I’m crowd-phobic. Crowds give me nervous attacks. It’s so ironic that I’m in a profession where I’m always surrounded by people!

Certainly it’d be hard to top this role you’ve been given in “Lost.” What’s next for you?

I think I’m gonna take a break from the Hollywood limelight. Maybe get back to philanthropic life. Acting is a great day job—I don’t discount it. But my plan? I’ve been involved in philanthropic work for so many years, and I will always be. Change is always great.
