Evi not happy with female character development

Postby sharon_b » Tue Apr 06, 2010 4:47 pm

This interview is very long so i'm just posting the Evi bits. Google translate has been used to translate this from Swedish to English so its not that great.

For many feminist blogs in the U.S. has "Lost" has been criticized for that Lilly's character Kate became the foster mother during the last, fifth, season. The series lost a woman who got to be good at resolving violent conflicts and problems, such as men traditionally associated with the film and television. Writer sawed also to the men in the TV series, not just forced to take parental leave from the fights and shootings. Evangeline Lilly agree with the critics.

- "Lost" had the potential to be a series that let women take their place, but the makers went astray. TV series is extremely male dominated. I experience it every day when I work. I notice it when I read scripts and when I look at the sections. The female characters seem, unfortunately, just be there for romance, and for being a mom. Even my character, which I think they originally had in mind would be dynamic, interesting and very diverse, but ultimately only two tasks: assist with romance and a mom.

At Lilly's arm is visible wounds from tree climbing, a hobby that was written into the script. The landlady has also been solallergisk and staying in the shade as much as possible. During interviews she usually almost always have to answer questions about who the macho men of the island that she wants the character Kate will choose the last section. She has no answer. In season three, she was so annoyed that Kate was indecisive and desperate for love of men that she wanted to give his character a slap in the face. She needs to think the criticism she has just given their employer.

- I do not want to sound like I do not think the romance and above all child-bearing is meaningful, bold and beautiful, but I must say that there is a very strange re spectra for all considered to be masculine in this industry. What is considered feminine are perceived as not as important or interesting. There is nothing more important in life than to have and raise a child so I am proud of the role of Kate, but as a whole, I do not direct that "Lost" will be remembered as a beautiful feminist teveserie.

I really hope we get a better translation soon.

While I agree with her a bit I still have to say that Kate got to do a lot stuff that other women on the show could only dream of. I mean think about Claire for example. All she ever was, was "the pregnant chick" but the men were in a small boxes too; Jack was the doctor who had an obsession to fix things (after all these years, he still does), Sayid was a man who's best skill was his brain and fighting skills (now he's nothing but an empty shell) and Sawyer was the witty a-hole (he's changed a bit). I think Kate developed a bit more than other women on the show.

I'm not happy with it either. :? :x
Kate deserves a bigger role than what she's doing now. I mean, it's the final season, for heaven's sake! Don't tell me her main purpose is to reunite Claire/Aaron because that's just LAME & so NOT everything Kate is.

Bring back the BADASS, gun-totting, state hoppin' extraordinaire that is Kate Austen!

You'd think they'd give her great, big, unforgettable thing/s to do (like Locke, Ben (circa season 3-4) Desmond, Jacob/MIB, and, I really hate to say this---Juliet & even Richard  ) ..
The SERIES FINALE. Last time we'll ever see her .. We're more than halfway through, and she's barely on the episodes. :x
