Article: Dark plot of "Afterwards" took Evi to a dark place

Evangeline Lilly was so disturbed playing a mother forced to confront the loss of a child in her new movie that there were often days she simply could not work.

"A couple of days I went on set and said, 'I just can't do it today,'" says Lilly. "I went in to that dark place so deeply that I was spent."

In "Afterwards," Romain Duris plays a New York lawyer who is neglecting his wife, played by Lilly, and their daughter. When Duris encounters a strange doctor, played by John Malkovich, who claims he can sense when someone is about to die, the family begins to unravel.

Directed by Gilles Bourdos, "Afterwards" is the first major film role for Lilly, best known for playing Kate Austen on "Lost."

Although Lilly does not have children of her own, she says she used her relationship with her nephews as inspiration for her character. Having to imagine the loss of a loved one obviously took its toll.

Sometimes, says Lilly, she would arrive on set and have to make it known that "I have nothing left to pull out," she says, referring to the emotional drain of the role.

However, that sort of dedication, she says, is an inherent part of the job.

"That's one of the things about acting," says Lilly. "You give so much."
