"Afterwards" casting news

Postby sharon_b » Tue Jul 03, 2007 11:34 pm

Hey guys.... just want keep you updated on the lastest casting news. On the imdb.com board of Afterwards it has listed Lars Engstrom as a new member of the cast who plays a Evangelist's Companion.

I went on his Myspace page and in the blurb section he wrote a brief comment on his role in Afterwards, which says-

"I just played a street evangelist who falls apart after his friend is accidentally killed in the film "Afterwards", starring John Malkovich and currently filming"

This is the link to his myspace page www.myspace.com/larsengstrom

It looks like he likes to keep it very detailed and updated. As of now there is no entries in his blog relating to Afterwards but he might decided to post something about the movie in the near future like he has done with his other movies, so guys keep your eyes pealed!

Please post all cast related news here to keep it all in one place. Thanks.

Some more casting news Pascale Bussières has also joined the cast to play Anna a Russian immigrant in the United States.

Thanks to Elms for roughly translating this article into English for us. :)

John Malkovich will predict the death of Pascale Bussières

Pascale Bussières will give the counterpart to John Malkovich and to Romain Duris in Afterwards, a psychological thriller which will be partly turned to Montreal this summer.

The Québécois actress will play in this film of the French Gilles Bourdos the part of Anna, a Russian immigrant in the United States.

Adapted of a novel of Guillaume Musso (And After..., run out with more than 300 000 specimens in France), Afterwards tells the history of a young new Yorkean lawyer (Romain Duris) disturbed by the meeting of a strange doctor (John Malkovich) who claims to be able to predict the death of the others. The character of Anna, a former friend of childhood of lawyer, will be one of these people whose doctor will predict eminent death.

"The character of Romain had lost sight of the fact Anna and by learning that the doctor had predicted his death, it will find it to try to protect it", explains Pascale Bussières, joined yesterday.

"I have ten days of turning and the majority of my scenes will be with Romain Duris. That is likely to be funny because I know Romain well. It is a friend. Moreover, when I announced to him that I had had the role, it said to me: that will be funny, I will destabilize you. But I believe that with its English (it is the first anglophone role of the French actor), it is more me which will be able to destabilize it...

"I also have during my nine days of turning, a scene or two with John Malkovich. That will be a little intimidating. It is a so intense actor, almost mystical... "

Pascale Bussières took down the role of Anna after having passed two hearings. The Québécois company Christal Films which coproduit the full-length film held so that at least a Québécois actress plays in film.

"One organized for the realizer of hearings with Québécois actresses. One saw some several and he loved Pascale much, underlines Christian Larouche, president de Christal Films.

Russian accent

For her role in film, the Québécois actress will have to tint her English of a light Russian accent.

"With my first hearing, I spoke with normal English, indicates the actress who already played until now in an English film half-dozen.

"Then they recalled me for the one second hearing by me specifying that they would like this time that I have a Russian accent. But they said that to me the day before, at 10 hours of hearing. I thus called in catastrophe a Russian coach, who gave me some councils. I made hearing, that did well.

"Then when the realizer recalled me, he said to me that I had the role but that there was a small problem of accent. The first nobody whom it had consulted had said to him that my accent sounded French, the second said to him that that sounded Italian and the third that that sounded Polish. It then asked to me whether I preferred that my character does not have an accent. I answered that not because for the composition of the character, I prefer that. That allows a greater implication in the character."

The turning of Afterwards, a production of $14 million, began in New York on last 6June and will move in Montreal at at the beginning of July, after a stopover in New Mexico. Five weeks of turning are envisaged in Montreal. The film should take the poster with the autumn 2008.

I know its aaaages away........... but as i posted on Lost -Media a fall 2008 release date could be a good thing.

I read somewhere ages ago that releasing a movie at different times of year can effect its popularity, box office success and chances of the movie or actors getting nominated for awards.

Movies released at the very beginning of the year (January, February, March) don't have good box office success (probably b/c everyone’s broke after xmas) and these months are normally resevered for movies that are not up to a high standard ( you know the ones that go straight to DVD or have limited cinema releases). So production companies release these earlier in the year so that they can concentrate more on promoting the movies that they know are going to be successful.

Releasing a movie later on in the year in particular at the end of Summer, Autumn and Winter is good move because-

1) The movie market is on fire at that time.- People are back from their vacations abroad so they are more likely to go to the cinema. They also have more money to burn at that time of year because its just b4 xmas.

2) The end of year is just before award season (which happens at the beginning of every year) so having a movie that comes out a few months b4 that means it is more likely to get some recognition compared to a movie that was release 10 months ago, because how many people actually remember a movie that was released in February???

So that is why I am glad Afterwards is getting released when it is ( if the above article is correct) even if its a painfully looong wait for us. Obviously just because its getting released in the autumn doesn’t automatically mean its going to be a successful movie. It just means that more people ( fans, critics and award panel judges etc) are more likely pay attention to it because its being released in a competitive period.

Jeeez......im sooo lazy, it just copied and pasted my post from L-M because i couldnt be bothered to write a new one. lol :P. But overall i'm excited about the movie especially the casting choices. Im glad they are casting virtual unknowns like Romain Duris, Lars Engstrom and Pascale Bussières instead of big name movie stars. It kinda has an indie movie feel about it.

Intresting news regarding the character of young Claire because we will get to see what Evi's character was like when she was younger. And the casting director's would have had to cast someone who looked similar to Evi to make it look believable. I havent read the book so i didnt know that there was going to be a young Claire but i can't wait to see Sophi Knight and the actress who is suppose to be playing Evi's daughter.
