Languages on the Forum

Postby Belowen » Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:05 am

Hi Guys,

Just a reminder - can we please all remember to speak/type in English on the forum? It's wonderful that we have such a wide variety of cultures and nationalities posting here, but it's easier for everyone if we all speak English, as it's the main language of the site and forum. All posts in other languages will be removed in future.

Thankyou for your consideration...

:D

I accept this rule, but I don't understand why is the reason for to prohibit to write in other languages IF the translation is written too.

I guess that would be acceptable, but why would you bother going to the trouble of writing the same sentance twice, in two different languages?

ETA: Actually no, that probably won't be acceptable, because as I moderator I guess I need to see if what is being posted is appropriate. And as I don't speak every language under the sun I can't tell if the translation is correct or not... Not to say I don't trust the members of the forum, but it's to be on the safe side of things.

In this case the trouble is mine.

Exactly, if your trust in the members of the forum is not enough, you have a trouble. What a pity!

Well, I will not write in spanish nor valencià/català nevermore.

I believe that with the minimum of English that people know, we can be understood. For that reason I write in English, although I can make mistakes. And I learn more English, too!

As much as I do trust the people on this forum, I have a responsibility to Janine to moderate what people are saying. And if I can't read what language it's written in, how can I know what is written?

Anyway, thanks to those of you who do understand. I'm not trying to single anyone out, the forum will just work a lot better this way, in my opinion.

well I don't know if it would be really useful... the problem isn't how to spell or pronounce english words I think it's rather the gramatical structures and vocabulary (even if there are dictionnaries...)...

now I apologize, i just posted a poem I wrote in General Talk... i'm gonna erase it PM it to the concerned member... :D
Evie you're so beautiful !!!

isnt there usually a translation of it underneath the foreign speak?
I support Kate-15 and Rinconette writing in Spanish as I want to learn it.

I speak english because i want to respect the language the forum comes and i know it's better for everybody to speak in english be from where it comes, for that reason i agree with the rule but i think saying some things in your language for somebody that wants to learn your language isn't a problem (better if you make the translation), and it's nice for myself or for the person that speaks sometimes his language. And anyways, they exist translators of languages and i don't think it is a problem to consult it. When i don't know something in english i consult it and... you learn!, dont think?

Well perhaps if we have a thread dedicated to that topic alone, so it doesn't have to be all over the forum, I guess it could be acceptable. I'll PM Janine and ask her about it.

Okay, Janine said a topic dedicated to this would be a good idea, so I'll start it up in the 'off topic' section :)
